Proverbs 16:2 NIV

“All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.”

“At least his intentions were good.” I’ve certainly heard this before. As a matter of fact I’ve said it a time or two. It’s what we say when someone’s actions come up short or even harmful but we believe their intent was to be helpful. Here Solomon let’s us know that in those situations, actually in every situation, God always correctly discerns our motives. I know an elderly woman who has alienated about everyone in her quite large extended family. She regularly takes liberties doing and saying hurtful things and justifying them as meaning well. I believe she actually does. However I also believe she knows better but believes she has the right, even duty,to pursue her agenda for others. We can be the best at rationalizing our behavior. We can convince ourselves we know best and therefore must impose our will. In each of those instances, no matter how hard we work to make it ok, God knows and judges our heart. He is the only one with the ability to look directly into a heart and see the truth. Today allow God to examine and reveal your motives and then follow His leading. #BeTheEdge
