Proverbs 23:5 NIV

“Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” ‬‬

Two weeks ago I learned how to access my retirement accounts online. Man was that a bad time to start doing that. Not that there’s much in there to begin with but it’s amazing how much disappeared in the last two weeks as the markets rocketed downward. This verse took on a very fresh and up close meaning to me this week. I’ve decided to just glance at those accounts every so often rather than monitor them on a daily and sometimes hourly basis. It is amazing how quickly value on paper can disappear. Solomon understood this and although I’m sure his wealth never ran short he certainly experienced downturns in his agrarian society. Maybe it was bad crops. Perhaps timber lost value. Or a gold mine ran dry. Even though on different levels everyone experiences the ability to very quickly lose perceived value in the financial realm. Thankfully Jesus reminds us not to put our faith and trust in those things. He goes so far as to say don’t worry about what you wear, don’t worry about what you eat, pretty much don’t worry about anything. He even compares the beauty of the flowers by reminding us, as I’m sure Solomon knew, that even the king in all his splendor was not even close to the beauty of the flowers in the field. Today continue to build wealth if God leads you to just don’t let it control your vision. #BeTheEdge
