Proverbs 28:7 NIV

“A discerning son heeds instruction, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.”

I love our big family get togethers. They always include more food than necessary. So do most cookouts and Bar-B-Q’s I attend. In light of this verse here is one that really hurts, dinner on the grounds. Yep, a great tradition at the country churches I pastored or visited. Now to assuage the guilt. Although consistently over eating is know in scripture as gluttony, I prefer to refer to it as purely recreational eating. Solomon is this verse is not speaking of that. Here he is referring more directly to the kinds of people the son engages with in this behavior. He is telling us that a person who hangs out with people who practice debauchery and a sinful, lascivious lifestyle brings shame on himself and his family. The discerning son is the one who understands what God is looking for from His followers and lives that way. It is a very clear contrast that we don’t have to look far to see played out in society today. It is often surprising to see siblings from the same home, raised with the same guidance choose such differing paths in life. This verse speaks a bit to that but more directly it challenges us to watch and be aware of not only how we live but who we choose to live it with. Today choose your guiding principles and companions wisely. #BeTheEdge
