“a strutting rooster, a he-goat, and a king secure against revolt.”
In my repeat journey through Proverb’s I have read this verse well over a hundred times. I’ve always liked the picture it presents. I’m not a big fan of all things to do with the British Royal family but I do see some of their regal pomp and circumstance in this verse. However, recently I’ve been reading some commentaries that believe this also gives a pre-incarnate look at Jesus. The Pulpit Commentary puts it this way, “This passage, again, has been taken in a spiritual sense as referring to Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Warrior girt with the sword, the Leader of the flock, the King of kings.” I like it. It can be easy to see Jesus the man, the huge exposure to the series ‘The Chosen’ has contributed to that. I think that has been a very positive result of the quality of that production. People often see another Jesus, one who sort of hovers as he walked the earth. A bit unrealistic and super spiritual while being aloof. He was absolutely 100% God and 100% man at the same time. For our theologians this is known as the Hypostatic Union. Enjoying sharing that at lunch. Here we see Him as the powerful, steady, conquering leader and King that He is. I know a rooster and a goat are not great Jesus comparisons at first glance but in light of their culture they are powerful images. And a king? Absolutely! Today see Jesus for who He really was, is and always will be. #BeTheEdge
