“She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.”
This is another of our monthly visits with Solomon’s Proverbs 31 woman. Verse by verse we encounter this fascinating homemaker, business woman, wife and mother. She is amazing and potentially causes a sense of guilt in every woman who doesn’t live up to her example. For that matter men can feel pretty inadequate looking at her life as well. If we see her life as a model, a goal, then we can appreciate who she was and learn from her example. As our children grew up, getting dressed for school or church or other certain occasions called for appropriate attire. This created some battles. One of our three had a way of taking whatever his mom put on him and never looked the same 5 minutes after she dressed him. This verse describes a very classy yet subtle outfit for Solomon’s day. St Jerome said it this way, “The wife dresses herself in a way becoming her station, avoiding the extremes of sordid simplicity and ostentatious luxury”. This chapter, and specifically this verse, have very spiritual meanings also that can get lost in pondering the individual person. This is about more than how to “look and cook”. It also represents the righteous acts of God’s holy people. It’s living appropriately as a follower of Christ. Not flashy or self deprecating but holy, humble and boldly representing His kingdom. Today live in a way that reflects your life as a child of The King. #BeTheEdge
