Proverbs 4:11 NIV

“I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.”

What a great example of a father’s teaching. First you instruct and then you model. “To teach duty without truth is to teach practice without motive; to teach truth without duty is to teach motive without the practice to which it should lead” (Wardlaw)” There are too many people today that like to tell others what to do but don’t live out their instructions in their own lives. It’s the fallacy of “do as I say not as I do.” After working for decades with teenagers I can say without hesitation that that does not work. Kids will follow an example much more often than they follow instruction. When they receive solid biblical instruction given by one whose life models that same instruction the likely hood of them following it goes way up. I would add that if only one of the two happens, modeling Godly behavior is vastly more important than the instruction. The old rule of disciplining someone is to have them watch you do it, then have them do it with you, next you watch them do it and finally they do it on their own. There is no short cut or cheap version of raising someone to live wisely. Today model wise and Godly living. #BeTheEdge
