Proverbs 21:4 NIV

“Haughty eyes and a proud heart— the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.”‬‬

The fallen nature of man. Wow, what a concept. Thanks Adam and Eve. I mean because they wouldn’t just enjoy everything about the garden except one particular tree we all pay the price of a broken, fallen nature on our entry into the planet. Here’s the thing, if they hadn’t done it and somehow no one until we came along had, we would have. Ok, I would have. I know my proclivity toward sin and rebellion is strong. It’s still there but as a teen and a young man I found the temptations of sin even stronger. I would definitely have eaten the apple. The word for proud in this verse in the original language is more directly translated “lamp”. It implies that a person shines a light on themselves and their own accomplishments. They want the world to see what they have done and believe that it was their accomplishment apart from God. The sin is in shining the light on themselves rather than seeking to focus it on God and to His glory. The Talmud tells us that pride is greater than sin. I don’t know about that but I suspect many of us could admit that we have been guilty at times of allowing the light to shine on us and we don’t always point to God as the source of the good things in our story. That is my temptation to bite the apple. I have no idea what yours is. I don’t need to know nor do I want to know but you and God know. He wants to help you overcome whatever your temptations are. Today let Him. #BeTheEdge

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:13‬ ‭NIV
