Proverbs 5:21 NIV

“For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and He examines all your paths.”

I used to be a bit intimidated by this verse and others like it. The idea that God watched every move I made and examined the ways I chose to go made me feel a bit invaded. I was taught about a God who was just waiting to catch me doing something wrong or something I shouldn’t be doing, and then would “zap” me. I was obedient out of fear of making a wrong move and facing the consequences. I saw God a bit like law enforcement. Eventually, I learned to appreciate the ever-present God and guide of my journey. He has no interest in being like a cop, any more than I do with my children or, now, my grandchildren. I love catching them doing something good, even life-giving to their siblings and peers. God does, too. Scripture often encourages us, as His followers, to represent His love and kindness to those in our lives. Now, that’s a great way to live and a fun way to see our Heavenly Father engaging with us. There’s no doubt that a level of accountability and healthy restraint is part of the life of a believer who knows God is the ever-present audience for all of our actions and interactions. In the same way my children would refrain from certain behaviors with me present, that they might indulge in when I wasn’t, awareness of God’s presence brings safety, comfort, and peace. Today, live with the awareness that He is right there with you. #BeTheEdge
