“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.”
A lot of women read these devotions. Occasionally I get the image of them seeing a verse like this and going, “Whew, off the hook today.” Sorry ladies. No doubt Solomon is talking directly to men. We are the ones who historically allow a woman’s beauty to distract our hearts and minds from the things of God and set us up for a fall which can be the most destructive kind of sin for not only us but every life we touch. However, in a broad, yet no less biblical sense, all of us are prone to allowing people and objects to distract us from God and His purpose in our lives. It could be as described in this chapter, illicit sexual desire, however it can also be sports or other activities, or as simple as clothes, cars or other shiny objects. It doesn’t matter. Anything that takes even the slightest amount of focus off God and His Kingdom is considered an idol and we know that scripture speaks very unkindly about idols and those that surrender any part of their focus to them. We can not focus on both God and earthly desires. Today keep your eyes on Him. #BeTheEdge
