Proverbs 7:18 NIV

“Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning; let’s enjoy ourselves with love!”

Solomon has watched a lot of young men who were seduced and destroyed. This verse falls in the midst of his telling a story that was very common. It is still all too common. We see passion overtake reason. If that’s not enough we see alcohol join with that passion to completely neutralize reason. The result is death. I suspect we all have memories of people from our younger days who lived this story. Maybe even some of us. We know the destructive nature of allowing something other than the Holy Spirit to dictate our actions. Not only that we know the power given over to someone who can use our passions and get us to dull them even more with other means. Most of us recognize the blatant stupidity in this young man. We have a sense of how his journey will end. However it can be easy to see the danger to them yet miss or ignore the times we let emotion and other stimulus overtake our reason. It may be a blind spot issue. Perhaps the desire for power is dangled in front of us. Maybe it’s an opportunity to grab some wealth on the sly. Combined with other clarity diminishing influences we can find ourselves in the same desperate place. It is incumbent to allow only the Holy Spirit to control our passions and decisions. Today recognize the temptations of the evil one and pursue God alone. #BeTheEdge
