Proverbs 7:2 NIV

“Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.” ‬‬

I don’t want to shock you but “Apple of your eye” is not in the original language. It was originally attributed to Albert the Great in the 9th century. More specifically in this verse the Hebrew referred to the pupil or the whole eyeball. In the Old Testament it literally meant a much less romanticized “the dark part of the eye”. Some translations make it “the little man of the eye”. Go figure. The important message is that as important as seeing with the eye is it is equally as important that we guard what God teaches us. The apple of your eye was a King James Version effort to show how intimately God wants us to treasure His commands. We use to play a game called “Would you rather”. The idea was to give two options to chose which you would prefer. Would you rather eat ice cream or cake? Would you rather freeze to death or burn to death? That kind of thing. One that I remember was would you rather lose your sense of sight or hearing. To me it was a no brained. I would not like to be blind. Solomon is making a strong case that God’s commands are as intricate to living a successful life as the ability to see, more so actually. Today treasure God’s truth and understand that without it you may as well be blind. #BeTheEdge
