Proverbs 9:7 NIV

“Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse.”

I recently had someone send me a video clip of a person being warned about stepping off a curb into traffic. As he turned to give a mocking reply and move forward he stepped right in front of a speeding car. It was absurd but he thought he knew what he was doing. It was obvious this persons pride affected their ability to listen to others. Solomon takes that kind of idiocy to a new level of responsibility in warning the person giving correction or counsel not to waste their time. That’s hard for me because I’m a rescuer by nature. The challenge is to recognize the mockers and wicked in our life. Then we have to know when to speak into their story. There may come a time but it must be at a very Spirit led moment. Otherwise we will incur insults and abuse. We may incur them anyway. Today seems to be the day of the extreme lunatic fringe. I’m always amazed by those who attempt to lead or even simply live moral God honoring lives and the mockers and wicked who show up in their story to mock, ridicule and even threaten them. The mocker and wicked seem to have become the norm in many settings these days. Athletes, politicians, business leaders, law enforcement and even average parents have become targets when their lives speak into our world of chaos and sin. We must be careful both when and how we speak into those arenas. Today as God leads speak and when He doesn’t, as much as possible, live at peace. #BeTheEdge
